September 2013 Book Display- International Talk Like A Pirate Day

Hello,

International Talk Like A Pirate Day was on September 19th in 2013.

There was a book display that showed off swashbuckling young adult books set on the high seas.  In addition, I created a poster promoting the how to speak pirate option on the language database accessible through the library.

I was able to find some fun pieces of pirate clip art, which were used for the book display sign and the poster promoting International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

In addition, I also created a poster by taking a screen shot of the Mango Languages Database about how patrons can learn to speak pirate.

August 2013 Display- Back to (Paranormal) School

Hello,

Back to school time can be quite busy.  Students need to organize their schedules, buy textbooks, and get use to waking up early again.

For the Back to School display I wanted to add a bit of whimsy to the process of getting ready for that first day back in class by showcasing the many Young Adult novels that involve paranormal activity and high schoolers.

Decorations

Displays that I created on the book stacks had a theme of a magic school, similar to what is seen in the "Harry Potter" series by JK Rowling.

The crochet Sorting Hat that I created was the first item patrons saw upon entering the Teen Zone.  This was important since the Sorting Hat decided which houses the students would join upon them arriving at Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat was made by using this wonderful crochet pattern from the Crafty Is Cool blog.

To add to the paranormal school atmosphere I also created magical "textbooks" out of cardboard boxes, construction paper and even googly eyes.  Some of the titles include: "Potions 101" and "Mythical Creatures."

If one is to attend a magic school practicing spells is essential.  That is why the last decoration involved a cauldron filled with apples for a back to school spell.  A very wise owl watched over the contents to make sure the spell was done correctly.

In addition to the decorations, school crests from a variety of young adult novels were displayed at the end of the book stacks.  A contest was run to see how well teenage patrons remembered the schools from their favorite novels.  It was quite enjoyable to see how hard the patrons worked to figure out the book titles.

Book Display

For the book display poster I found a few pieces of clip art that I layered together to create the hallway of "Paranormal School."

The books put on display were examples of young adult novels where the teenagers in the books were attending a magical school or were involved with paranormal activities while going to school.  The popularity of these types of books was quite evident with how many were checked out from the display.
